The Samba Ballroom Dance Style
The Samba is a Ballroom style in the Latin category
Samba is a very lively, rhythmical dance of Brazilian origin. There are actually two major streams of Samba dance: modern Ballroom Samba and traditional Brazilian Samba. The traditional samba is the dance at the heart of Rio de Janiero's annual carnival.
Ballroom Samba is danced to music in 2/4 or 4/4 time and while the basic movements are created through the bending and straightening of the knees. There is also loads of torso and hip action that makes the dance a consistent favorite to watch at dance competitions around the world. Ballroom Samba belongs to the International Latin category of dance.
Although the dance is an active, hugely fun dance to perform and a crowd pleaser to watch, it doesn't really serve too much purpose as a social dance style so it's probably not the best dance to learn for the social dancer.
