Dance Lessons related Questions answered
Our Dance Studios in Phoenix, Tempe and Scottsdale frequently receive Questions
When beginning dance lessons you are unfamiliar with the environment in the dance studio. No problem! You will be made to feel comfortable within no time at all. Here are a few common questions. Remember, you are welcome to call us if your question is not answered here:
:: How many men do you teach?
You'll be surprised how often we get asked this question. Believe it or not we actually instruct many male clients. As a matter of fact, we actually really enjoy coaching men, new to dance. The rewards of learning to dance for men, in particular, are great! Our male clients range from busy executives to sportsmen. Most single men realize, after several years that the ability to dance actually sets them apart from the crowd in the "singles scene". In case you haven't noticed, guys, the ladies like to dance! If you're a guy thinking about learning to dance... do it today! We truly enjoy teaching the guys. Few experiences can be more rewarding than taking a shy guy from complete newbie to seeing him perform in his first dance competition - the transformation is amazing!
:: Will I actually learn dance styles I can use?
Absolutely! One of the unique aspects of our teaching approach is that we try to satisfy your initial dance goals by teaching you according to what you want but we also teach you according to what we know you'll be able to use. Many couples are surprised to learn that many of the techniques in strict ballroom transfer well to many other types of social dancing. We also regularly hold a variety of affordable group classes and "crash courses" in some exciting, popular, night club dances like Salsa, Merengue, Swing and Two-step.
:: What clothes should I wear?
In fact, you can wear near any form of clothing you wish, however, we do recommend that you consider comfortable shoes (like thin-soled leather shoes or thin-soled sneakers and closed-back heels for ladies) and loose fitting clothes (like sweat pants and T-shirt) to begin. Many of our clients race out from their lunch break or arrive at the studio just after work in their work clothes! Although this is acceptable, this isn't ideal as some of the more active dance moves will lead to some sweating. As you improve over time, you may consider investing in a good pair of dance shoes. There are several vendors in town that offer fairly affordable dance clothing. Some of these are listed on our site... if you are just starting, there will be no need to consider these just yet. Be sure that no matter what you wear, you will not feel out of place, you will notice that the students around you are wearing many different types of clothing. We strongly recommend active gear (e.g. sweat pants, T-shirt, sneakers) for our group courses as these are typically very active! Just be comfortable in what you are wearing!
:: How long will it take for me to learn to dance?
This depends on your objectives: If you are a wedding couple wanting to learn a "first dance" we recommend you allow for 6-8 weeks. If you want to learn a single step, you might be able to master the basics in one of our group, week-end classes or a few weeks of one-on-one classes. If you want to become a ballroom competitor, you may be able to enter your first competition in as little as 4-5 months, however, mastery is a life-long process! The good thing is that no matter how long your learning process takes, it will definitely be enjoyable. We recommend that the easiest way to learn is simply to start today... you will soon assess your progress for yourself. Also, be careful about setting unneccessary deadlines - just aim to enjoy the process... this is about fun after all!
